Anuradhapura (Haththikuchcha Buddhist Temple)

The caves for the meditating Bhikkhus had been constructed in the 2nd C. B.C. and the monastery had been in existence up to about the 13th Century. The Cave Temple was improved as a Monastery with the addition of Shrine rooms, Uposatha house, Alms hall, Vata-da-ge, Bodhigara and many Padanagharas of the double platform type later in the 7th or 8th Century. More than 40 inscriptions of the 6th or 7th Century are found at a site in which the devotees have recorded the deposit of money for the continued supply of alms to the temple by using the interest of the money they have deposited.

It is believed that King Sirisangabo (247-249 A.D.) gave his head in donation to a poor man who came from Anuradhapura and a small vata-da-ge had been constructed at the site where his body had fallen from the rock cave above.
