Kandy (Balana Fort)

The Fort of the Sinhalese at Balana at Kadugannawa had been constructed in a strategic point as it is above the route to Kandy bypassing the Kadugannawa Pass. It is called Balana Kanda as it is a guard point to observe strangers entering Kandy. It is situated in the Ganetenna Gap in Udatenna 5 km from Kadugannawa.

This is an ideal place for the guerrilla type of warfare waged by Kandyan Kings against the Portuguese, Dutch and British armies. Several battles took place near Balana fort including the fight between Konnappu Bandara and Rajasinghe I of Sitawaka.

Only the foundation of the Fort is to be seen today.
