Kandy – Magul Maduwa (Audience Hall)

The construction of the Magul Maduwa was started by King Rajadhi Rajasinghe (1781-1798) in 1783, may be to supplement the old one. The King held meetings with his Ministers and was also used to hear important cases and as such this was also referred to as “Maha Naduwa”.

The present Magul Maduwa has an extension made by the British in 1875 to facilitate the visit of the Prince of Wales (King Edward VII) to Kandy.

The building has 2 rows of pillars, 24 on one side for a total of 48. The Pillars and Pillar capitals are carved like the carvings of Embekke Devalaya.
