This is the 4^th important Devalaya in Kandy to the west of the Natha Devalaya. Robert Knox has mentioned about the Pattini Devalaya and may have constructed earlier.

King Wimaladharmasuriya II (1592-1602 A.D.) is said to have brought the Pattini Statue from Malagammana Devalaya and installed it in this Devalaya.

The Pattini worship was brought to Sri Lanka during the period of King Gajabahu I (171-195 A.D.) from South India.
