Kandy (Dawson’s Tower)

This pillar was constructed in 1829 in memory of Captain William Francis Dawson who was responsible for the designing and construction of the motor road to Kandy. While constructing the road to Kandy the Engineer died.

The Tower is 125 feet in height and was constructed by the friends of the Engineer from their private collection including the money given by the British Governor Sir Edward Barnes and the total cost was P 345, 7 Shillings, 11 pence. Dawson died on 28th March 1829.

There is a spiral staircase to go to the top but is not in use now.
