Kandy (Udawattakele Sanctuary)

UDAWATTAKELE SANCTUARY – In 1856 Udawattakele or “Udawasalawatte” was declared as a Protected Forest and later declared as a Sanctuary in 1938.
It is 257 acres in extent and the approach road is from the town near the Municipal Council Office of Kandy.

There are 33 different species of Trees, 23 species of birds (07 endemic), 06 Mammals (01 endemic) in the forest reserve.

The Garrison Cemetery of Kandy is within the Sanctuary behind the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, where 163 graves of British Nationals are found.
The entrance fee is Rs. 250/- per person for the Sanctuary.
